A hefty 7.2-magnitude earthquake shook central Peru's coast on Friday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The USGS initially assigned a lower magnitude but later upgraded it. The quake struck 8.8 kilometers from Atiquipa district, approximately 5.5 miles away.
Initially, the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center dismissed any tsunami threats. However, it subsequently alerted about the possibility of waves as high as three meters affecting some coastal areas.
